The lifecycle of a honey bee unfolds through four fascinating stages — egg, larva, pupa, and adult — each vital to the survival and productivity of the hive. Queens, workers, and drones develop at different speeds: queens mature in about 16 days, workers in 21 days, and drones in 24 days.

🐝 The Four Stages of a Honey Bee’s Life

1️⃣ Egg Stage (Days 1–3)

- The queen bee lays up to 3,000 eggs per day, each the size of a grain of rice.  

- Eggs are placed in hexagonal wax cells within the hive.  

- Fertilized eggs become female worker bees, while unfertilized ones become male drones.  

- After about three days, the egg hatches into a larva.  

2️⃣ Larva Stage (Days 4–9)

- The larva is a small, white, legless grub.  

- Nurse bees feed it royal jelly for the first few days, then switch to worker or drone jelly depending on caste.  

- The larva molts several times as it grows, increasing its size up to 1,500 times.  

- After about six days, the cell is sealed with wax to prepare for the next stage.  

3️⃣ Pupa Stage (Days 10–21)

- Inside the sealed cell, the larva transforms into a pupa.  

- During this stage, the bee develops wings, legs, eyes, and antennae.  

- The queen emerges first (after about 8 days), followed by workers and drones.  

- Tiny hairs begin to grow, giving the bee its fuzzy appearance.  

4️⃣ Adult Stage (Day 22 onward)

- The adult bee chews through the wax cap to emerge.  

- Worker bees take on roles based on age: cleaning cells, feeding larvae, guarding the hive, and foraging for nectar.  

- Drones focus solely on mating with the queen.  

- Queens live up to five years, while workers survive about six weeks during active seasons.
